Why can't you see the Moon tonight? ›

The new Moon is invisible because it is approximately between Earth and the Sun, so the dark half of the Moon faces us, and the sunlit half faces the Sun. (Sometimes, the new Moon is directly in front of the Sun, in which case we would see a solar eclipse.)

The best times to see a daytime Moon are perhaps during the first and last quarter phases, when the Moon is high enough above the horizon and at about 90 degrees from the Sun in the sky. This helps make the Sun's reflected light bright enough to see as it reflects off of the Moon.

As viewed from outside the polar circles, the Moon, like all other celestial objects outside the circumpolar circle, rises from the eastern half of the horizon and sets into the western half due to Earth's rotation.

The moon's motion through our sky is similar to that of the sun, but different: Like the sun, the moon rises in the east and sets in the west (with some exceptions for observers in earth's extreme northern and southern regions). Like the sun, the moon doesn't move across our sky quite as fast as the stars do.

Generally, a full moon is the time to make and use moon water (as opposed to any other moon phase). The Earth's daily revolution on its axis means that the Moon is actually above the horizon for about 12 hours out of every 24. Usually, some portion of that time will be during daylight – you just need to look carefully, because its brightness is so much less than the Sun's.

The way the Moon looks to us is continually changing. It moves across the sky rapidly over the course of a night. And from night to night it rises and falls at different times and in different parts of the sky.

The Moon reflects the Sun's light sending it through our atmosphere to create different effects. At night the Moon appears yellow while in the day it often appears white. When the Moon is near the horizon it often appears orange due to the thick atmosphere the light must travel through.

The First Quarter Moon rises in the middle of the day and can be seen in the daytime sky. Half of the side of the Moon facing Earth is illuminated by the Sun. The First Quarter Moon is also seen against a starry night sky until it sets below the western horizon at approximately midnight, leaving the sky very dark.

Due to the variations in tilt from the earth we know that moonrise/moonset times vary. Is it possible that in any location on the earth one might see more than one moonrise or moonset in a given 24 hour period? Yes.

While one sunrise to the next is about 24 hours, one moonrise to the next is about 24 hours and 50 minutes. The extra 50 minutes are due to the Moon's orbit about the Earth. It therefore shouldn't be surprising that there are days where moonrise occurs shortly before sunrise and moonset occurs shortly after sunset.

When the Moon is opposite the Sun, we see a full Moon and when it is between the Earth and Sun, it is a new Moon and not visible to us.

On a new moon day, the illuminated part of the moon faces the Sun whereas, the dark part, i.e., the non-illuminated part of the moon faces the Earth. Thus, we cannot see the moon.
