Rain fell in parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana today, but much of the rest of the nation enjoyed clear fall weather. On Friday, showers and thunderstorms swept over eastern Oklahoma, the lower Mississippi Valley across Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee and from northeni Florida into southern Virginia. Elsewhere, showers were scattered over northern and central California. Light snow was scattered over higher elevations of the Sierra mountains, near Lake Tahoe, in east central California and west central Nevada. There were no reports of measurable snowfall.

Miami reached 94 degrees during the early afternoon and broke its high temperature record the date. Dickinson, N.D., also set a record high for the date, reaching 86 degrees. Kost Jennie M. Kost, 86, of Broad Mountain Nursing Home, Frackville, died Friday at the nursing home. Bom in Ashland, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Kost. She had formerly lived in Pottsville also. Kost was preceded in death by her friend, Catherine Wilson, with whom she resided, who died in July 1989.

Kost graduated from the deaf mute school in Philadelphia and worked at Pine Shift factory, Pottsville, retiring after 50 years of service. She was also a licensed beautician. She was of the Protestant faith. She was the last member 6f her immediate family. Services will be held at 10 a.m.

Monday at the James H. Evans Funeral Home Saint Clair. The Rev. Carl A. Borger will officiate.

David H. Ruch Funeral Chapel, Pottsville, is in charge. Charlotte Paul, 73, reporter, novelist ANACORTES, Wash. (AP) Charlotte Paul, a former Chicago reporter who went on to become a best-selling novelist and member of the U.S. Board of Paroles, died Wednesday of cancer at age 73.

In 1938, Paul worked as a reporter for the old Chicago Times. She and a co-worker got married and bought the weekly Snoqualmie Valley Record in 1949. Six years later she wrote the best-seller "Minding Your Own Business" and followed that with a sequel, "And Four to Grow." After the paper was sold in 1961 she and her husband were divorced and Paul was appointed to the state Board of Prison Terms and Parole. In 1964 she was named to the U.S. Board of Paroles and moved to Washington, DC.

She married Robert W. Reese in 1966 and moved to Lopez Island, where she wrote the novel "Phoenix Island." James G. Shoener, 62, of 124 N. Wayne Orwigsburg, died Friday evening in Pottsville Hospital, where he had been a patient for five days. Bom in Orwigsburg, he was a son of the late Ralph H.

and Alberta Nelson Shoener. Mr. Shoener was an electrician at former Alcoa plant in Cressona for 27 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg.

He was was World War II veteran, serving with the Navy. He was a member of Schuylkill Lodge 138 Orwigsburg; the Allentown consistory of the Masons, Tall Cedars of Pottsville, life member of the American Legion, James Steele Post 369, Orwigsburg; a life member of the Joseph W. Morrison Post 2198 VFW, Orwigsburg, member of the Deer LakeWest Brunswick Township Fire Company. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice M. Rhoades, Orwigsburg, two sisters, Florence Trent, Salem, Mary Leiby, Pottsville; two brothers, a twin brother.
