Terry Musser, R-Black River Falls, says that description is inaccurate. In a statement issued Friday, Musser said he wanted to "set the record straight and clarify the details of my military service." Musser's statement came after The Capital Times contacted Musser this week about allegations by a national advocacy group that he was misstating his service record in Vietnam. The Missouri-based P.O.W. Network charged on its Web site that Musser's military records show he never completed training for the Special Forces, popularly known as the Green Berets. Mary Schantag, a historian for the P.O.W.

Network, called Musser's attempt to portray himself as a Green Beret "a slap in the face" to those who serve in the Special Forces. "The real guys go through a hell of a lot of training to get where they are, and the fact that he is making false claims is a slap to every veteran that got out there and worked for it. When you Indicted Doyle Troha donations to president follow pattern 'MADISON (AP) Kenosha businessman Dennis Troha, who is accused of violating state campaign-donation limits with his political contributions to Gov. Jim Doyle, used similar tactics to donate $18,000 to President Bush in 2003, an analysis of public records revealed. Troha and eight family members each made the maximum $2,000 donation to the president's campaign in 2003, according to Federal Election Commission records examined by the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison.

A grand jury in Milwaukee indicted Troha this month on fraud charges for allegedly using family members to funnel contributions to Doyle in an effort to win approval for a casino Troha sought to build in Kenosha. Federal prosecutors say Troha illegally made loans to family members to cover the Doyle donations, a claim Troha's lawyer, Franklyn Gimbel, has denied. Troha is also accused of lying to investigators about his actions. Michelle Jacobs, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic in Milwaukee, declined to say whether authorities are investigating the Bush donations.

Musser said in a prepared statement that while he wore a green beret Friday when serving with the Special Forces in Fort Bragg, "I was not Special Forces qualified. My biography does not make that distinction clear enough." He added that he was "not old enough to begin training for Special Forces qualification" and that upon returning to Vietnam, "(I) ended my tenure with the Special Forces." Musser, who has been active in veterans' issues since being elected to the Assembly in 1984, said he planned to correct his official biography "to avoid any further confusion.

"It has never been my intent to mislead anyone about my military service. I apologize if anyone felt I misled them in any way," he said. Schantag said situations like Musser's are "not uncommon" and noted that Atlantic City, N.J., Mayor Bob Levy was forced to admit last year that he had improperly claimed for years to be a Green Beret. "It's an epidemic right now. But when you have a public official that you put your trust in and he's making the claim, it's not right," she said.

Avery's nephew slated for April trial MANITOWOC (AP) Next month's trial of Brendan Dassey, the teen accused of being a co-conspirator in the 2005 death of Teresa Halbach, isn't expected to be as technical or contentious as the recently completed trial of his uncle, Steven Avery. Avery's trial in Chilton lasted six weeks and featured 59 witnesses and 501 pieces of evidence.

Dassey's trial, which starts April 16, is expected to last two weeks and involve far less physical evidence. Dassey, 17, was accused with Avery of raping and killing Halbach after she went to Avery's salvage yard in rural Manitowoc County to photograph a minivan that Avery's sister had for sale. Avery, 44, was convicted last week of first-degree intentional homicide in a trial marked by detailed testimony about DNA evidence and contentious arguments over the admissibility of evidence. But Dassey's trial will be based largely on his statements to police instead of forensic evidence, said his attorney, Mark Fremgen. "The reality is that the two cases are distinct and, as you suspected, the evidence will be different," he said in an e-mail to The Post-Crescent of Appleton.

"We may not object to much of the physical evidence and how it was collected contrary to the Avery team because that was their defense." Dassey is charged with being party to sexual assault with the use of a dangerous weapon, first-degree intentional homicide and mutilation of a corpse. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life plus years in prison. According to a criminal complaint, Dassey admitted to investigators that he and Avery raped and killed Halbach and burned her body in a burn pit. He later recanted his confession in a letter to the Manitowoc County Judge Jerome Fox last summer. Lifetime tribute Memorials.
