🥘 Apple Pie Spice Ingredients

These spices are things you most likely already have! If you don't have cardamom, I strongly recommend getting it (but if you don't want to, you can use more allspice - *see note).

  • Cinnamon - 4 teaspoons of ground cinnamon.
  • Nutmeg - 2 teaspoons of ground nutmeg.
  • Allspice - ½ teaspoon of allspice.
  • Cardamom - ½ teaspoon of ground cardamom.
  • Cloves (optional) - ½ teaspoon of ground cloves.
  • Ginger (optional) - ½ teaspoon of ground ginger.

*Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!*

🔪 How To Make DIY Apple Pie Spice

Whether or not you want to add in the optional cloves and ginger is totally up to you, but it does make this mix extra special! All you're going to need for this simple recipe is a standard mixing bowl.

This will make about 8 teaspoons of apple pie spice, with a serving size generally being 1½ teaspoon.

  1. Add ingredients. In a small mixing bowl, combine 4 teaspoons of cinnamon, 2 teaspoons of nutmeg, and ½ teaspoon each of allspice, cardamom, cloves, and ginger, if using. Stir to combine.
  2. Store. Place your apple pie spice into a spice jar or airtight container until ready to use, up to 2-3 years (*see note).

This spice mix is perfect for any of your favorite apple recipes! Use it in your apple crisp, baked cinnamon apples, or homemade applesauce!

💭 Tips & Notes

  • To make this spice blend extra warm and special, add ½ teaspoon clove and/or ½ teaspoon ginger.
  • I highly recommend including the cardamom, but if you don't have it- you can omit it and adjust the allspice to 1 teaspoon.
  • You can replace cinnamon in any recipe with this apple pie spice recipe.
  • To store: Make sure to place your spice mix in a spice jar or airtight container. It is best to place spices in cabinets, away from direct sunlight, and they will last for up to 2-3 years. However, spices do lose flavor over time, so this time frame will vary based on how fresh the spices were when you used them to make your spice blend.

🥡 Storing

Spices keep their flavor the best when they are kept out of direct light in a cabinet or your pantry. Make sure that your apple pie spice is in an airtight container in order to ensure that it stays fresh for up to 2-3 years.

🥧 Ways To Use Apple Pie Spice

Obviously, apple pie spice is perfect for pies! However, it tastes great in a ton of other things as well. It's delicious in baked goods like cakes, muffins, crisps, and cobblers.

You can add it to your oatmeal, overnight oats, and baked apples, as well. If you're making anything with a strong apple flavor, this spice will be a thousand times better than just cinnamon alone! You can put it on sweet potatoes or even use it to make some apple spice juice!

❓ What's In Apple Pie Spice?

At its base, apple pie spice includes three main ingredients: cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg (which is typically what store-bought mix consists of). From there, each recipe can vary slightly by either including cardamom (or using it to replace the allspice altogether), adding in cloves, or adding ginger.

❓ How Much Apple Pie Spice Do I Use?

For apple pie specifically, a great rule of thumb is to use 1½ teaspoons per 6 apples. For any other desserts or dishes, I would follow the recipe or adjust to taste!

❓ What's The Difference Between Apple Pie Spice And Pumpkin Pie Spice?

These two spice blends are very similar. For my amazingly good homemade pumpkin pie spice, I always include ginger and cloves as well as some optional (though highly recommended) orange peel and mace.
