Okay, I don’t want to be a buzzkill, but it’s really starting to get my goat seeing folks who are absolutely old enough to know better romanticising the Internet circa 2000. Like, yeah, the Internet was smaller and less commercialised twenty years ago, but it was absolutely not a friendly place. You want to know what the Internet circa 2000 was like? There were popular Flash videos memeing on photos of Nazi death camp victims, and the latest viral trend was tricking people into looking at a high-resolution image of a man’s gaping anus. True, there was some great stuff, too, but acting like it was Hamster Dance and Homestar Runner as far as the eye could see is a pretty severe mischaracterisation.

(To be clear, when I say “the Internet circa 2000″, I mean roughly 1998–2002. I’ve gotten some responses to this post to the effect of “well, I was born in 1997 and I don’t remember any of that”, and that’s about a decade too young to have really been involved. Basically, if you don’t remember Mr. T Ate My Balls as a contemporary meme, I’m not including you in the category of “old enough to know better”!)

every single point in this post is INCREDIBLY valid, btw. i hate how sanitised a lot of the internet has become bc of megacorps making sure their apps stay in the app store. but holy sh*t, y'all, it wasn’t better back then.

It’s kind of like romanticizing the wild west. Yeah, there are some cool gunslinger stories, but when people can do whatever they want and avoid consequences by skip town and changing their name (new website, new forum), it doesn’t stay all fun and games forever.

Imagine typing in the URL of your favorite fan site (from memory of course) and seeing it’s been hacked and covered in p*rn and/or malware, or someone has posted shock-images to every subforum and every post. Now imagine this isn’t a weird, “i can’t believe that happened” thing but a somewhat common occurrence.

I don’t like what tech companies have turned the internet into today, and I don’t think it’s better all around now, but people forget the ugly parts sometimes.

fictional character discourse would be more fun if we all internalized the fact that characters are narrative tools, not people. once we have that basic fact down, we can start talking about what story the author is trying to tell using these characters, whether they’re successful, whether the story itself is successful and by what means we are measuring success—which are all really fun and interesting things to discuss! but we simply cannot get to that point unless we first accept that fictional characters simply do not have thoughts, feelings, opinions, or any agency on their own. a fictional character has more in common with the fictional chair theyre sitting on than with a real person

People who think that us not wanting to be called queer means we are saying they can't call themselves queer are the most self centred clowns in the universe. You gotta understand that some people never really grow. They never learn their lesson. They never recognise their mistakes, they never acknowledge their faults, they never admit they were in the wrong. You will never receive an apology from them, and you will never see their behaviour change.

yes, everyone is CAPABLE of growth and change. everyone has the RIGHT to growth and change. but no, not everyone will CHOOSE growth and change. some people are not interested in and cannot be made interested in self-improvement or self-reflection. some people will go their entire lives refusing to admit they might be wrong or examine their own behaviors. some people will never, ever accept responsibility for the effects they have on people and the world around them. humans are varied; some are just always gonna be like this.

it is VITAL to understand this if you’re the kind of person who tends to pour energy into helping others, especially if there are already people knowingly hurting you who consistently show absolutely no interest in changing that behavior. you can’t forcibly make them want to change who they are. you aren’t going to find a way to convince them to suddenly care that their behavior is hurting someone.

the motivation to change and grow comes from within. others may inspire us, but WE have to decide we want to be better and work towards that. until they decide that for themselves, nobody else can do it for them. and they might never. people are mortal. we are a finite series of choices. it is entirely possible to make mostly selfish ones.

everyone CAN grow, but not everyone will. not everyone wants to, and nobody can force the desire to grow as a person on someone else.

Are we as the trans community ready to acknowledge that sometimes gender just straight up changes?

Obviously this doesn’t apply to all people, but for some trans people they were fine being their AGAB until they weren’t.

I used to follow an enby who proudly identified as a woman for years before one day they just went “actually… it changed. I’m not vibing with that any more. I was a woman, but now I’m not and I’m ready to open a different chapter of my life.”

Sometimes people who are genderfluid don’t have fluctuating dysphoria, and just have a changing gender.

Sometimes non-binary people will find that their masc/femme alignment changes.

Sometimes people who were binary feel more non-binary, or oppositely binary.

Are we ready to normalize this too?

YES can we acknowledge that the “born this way” narrative (while true for many of us) is kinda just something we told cishets so they would stop telling us to change

i think as people with complicated genders and sh*t we have this desire to make a cohesive narrative that cisnormative society will accept, even at the expense of our own self-discovery. i think this also plays into the larger idea of “why should we make cis people comfortable with our existence?” why try to fashion a consistent narrative for the very society that labeled us as other in the first place? we do not need to be explicable

love how it’s become completely normal and acceptable to say explicitly sexual sh*t to random strangers on the internet, especially if they’re women. girl on tiktok has more than a b cup? top comments on anything she posts are automatically “mommy sorry mommy sorry”. woman on the internet is pretty and also feminine? “submissive and breedable” like that’s not the exact kind of gross, infantilizing sh*t women hear irl every single day. i constantly see comments on teenagers’ posts saying “hey don’t sexualize her she’s a minor” like it’s not weird or misogynistic to talk about a stranger’s“mommy milkers” online so long as she’s 18 or older. f*ck. maybe i’m a prude but i just don’t think you should get to make gross objectifying comments at random strangers just because you think the veneer of a mom fetish makes it #coolquirkyandprogressive instead of just creepy

and this is one of those cases where i absolutely agree with the“well it happens to men too” addition. bc it’s not subversive or feminist to spam random men with“looking submissive and breedable” or pegging jokes or whatever brand of sexual harassment is cool now. it’s just gross.
