This is the best apple crisp recipe with oatmeal that I've found Juicy, easy, healthy, quick - what more could one want? The usual way of making apple crisp uses all-purpose flour and quick-cooking oats.

For healthier I began using whole wheat flour and old-fashioned rolled oats. Not only healthier, but this German-style apple dessert has a nuttier taste. Delicious!

Check below why I say this is my Germanized version for this all-American Apple Crisp!

German?

This is my "Germanized" version. I love marzipan -- something so traditionally German. Adding almond flavoring to almost anything baked gives it that "marzipan-y" taste!

I added a bit of almond flavoring to the melted butter in order to distribute it well in the crumbly topping.

Wow, what an improvement! For me, this now becomes a German recipe for apple crisp! Why not give it a try?

Sugar?

Depending on the sweetness of the apples, you can omit the added sugar to the apples and lower the amount of brown sugar in the topping.

As a treat, instead of the sugar added to the apples, I've drizzled about 2 tablespoons of maple syrup over instead. Then to the oat mixture, I've added ½ cup chopped almonds. Pecans work great as well.

Apples?

  • When choosing apples, the best are those with a nice sweet-tartbalance.
  • Sometimes a mixture of apple varieties makes for a superdelicious treat.
  • Some varieties to try, either alone or in combinationare Cortlands, Empire (which are a cross between a Red Delicious andMcIntosh), Mutsu or Crispin, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and Jonathan.
  • The Granny Smith (my favorite eating apple) is very crisp and quitetart. I particularly like to use it in a mixture of apples for thisrecipe for apple crisp.

Oma says:

As you can see, recipes with apples can be altered so easily by changing the apples and the methods of sweetening them.

The final dessert, even when using the same recipe, can be different every time if you want.

FAQs

What is the difference between apple crisp and apple crumble? ›

Like an apple crisp, an apple crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a layer of topping. But unlike the crisp, the crumble topping rarely includes oats or nuts. Instead, a crumble's topping is more like streusel, made with flour, sugar and butter.

How do you make Martha Stewart apple crumble? ›

In a large bowl, toss together apples, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; transfer to prepared dish. In a bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter with brown sugar until fluffy. Mix in 1 cup flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt until large pieces form. Scatter over filling.

How do you keep apples from getting mushy in apple crisp? ›

The choice of apple you use in the crisp can affect how watery it may turn out. Choose a baking apple like Granny Smith or pippin, not Red Delicious. Also, make sure you use a thickener like flour or corn starch.

What is apple crumble called in America? ›

Apple crisp is a dessert made with a streusel topping. In the US, it is also called apple crumble, a word which refers to a different dessert in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Ingredients usually include cooked apples, butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and often oats and brown sugar, ginger, and/or nutmeg.

Which apples make the best crisp? ›

What Makes A Good Apple For Apple Crisp? The best apples for baking keep their structure under heat, which prevents the chunks of fruit from turning into mush after baking. The firm and crisp Granny Smith and Honeycrisp varieties are popular apples to use in apple pies and apple crisps.

What is the secret to crunchy crumble? ›

However, we also love adding porridge oats for extra chewiness, as in these recipes for very-berry oat crumble and American-style apple crisp. Chopped and toasted nuts such as pecans, almonds or hazelnuts also make a lovely addition to a traditional crumble, for taste as well as an extra-crunchy texture.

Why add lemon juice to apple crumble? ›

This is known as oxidation and occurs when the cells within the fruit are exposed to air. Lemon juice helps with this, acting to coat the flesh and protecting it. It also adds extra flavour to your apple crumble recipe and offsets the sweetness of the sugar.

What's the difference between a crisp and a crumble? ›

So what's a crumble vs. a crisp? A crumble is just a crisp without oats in the streusel. It may feature nuts, but the streusel topping is usually a simple combination of butter, flour, and sugar that is more clumpy than that of a crisp.

Should I cover my apple crisp while baking? ›

Baking: Start baking the apple crisp covered with foil. This allows the apples to soften without any risk of the topping over-browning. After about 20 minutes, remove the foil and let the crisp finish cooking uncovered. Once the juices are bubbling, the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender, it is done!

What is crumble topping made of? ›

As its name suggests, crumb topping is a dessert topping. It's a simple mixture of butter, sugar, and flour, and is typically used to top pies or muffins prior to baking for a crunchy, sweet contrast.

Why is my apple crumble mushy? ›

Use Overripe Fruit

Even if you choose the perfect apple variety, if the fruit is overripe, your apple pie filling will turn to mush. The perfect apple pie filling is not too sweet. It has just the right amount of tartness to offset the added richness of brown sugar and cinnamon.

Why didn't my apple crisp get crispy? ›

How can I make my apple crisp crispy? If your butter to flour to sugar ratio is off, it will result in a less crispy topping. You want to be careful not to add too much flour or too little. Also, we love adding old fashioned rolled oats to our crumble because it really gives it a nice crunch.

Can I cut apples the night before for apple crisp? ›

I prefer slicing the apples the day I plan to bake the crisp as they start to oxidize once they're sliced and turn brown in color. Add a little extra fresh lemon juice to help prevent the apples from turning super brown. Prepare the entire apple crisp, cover well, and refrigerate the night before baking.

Why is it important to use cold butter when preparing apple crisp? ›

Use cold, cubed butter.

Making the crumble with room temperature or melted butter will cause the topping to spread as it bakes, rather than creating a landscape of craggy, crunchy sweet pieces. Using cold butter will help all the crumble ingredients bind together before baking and then saturate them evenly in the oven.

What is the difference between crumble and crisp? ›

So what's a crumble vs. a crisp? A crumble is just a crisp without oats in the streusel. It may feature nuts, but the streusel topping is usually a simple combination of butter, flour, and sugar that is more clumpy than that of a crisp.

What is apple crumble vs crisp vs cobbler? ›

Cobbler: A fruit dessert made with a top crust of pie dough or biscuit dough but no bottom crust. Crisp/crumble: In Alberta, the terms are mostly interchangeable. Both refer to fruit desserts similar to cobbler but made with a brown sugar streusel topping sometimes containing old-fashioned rolled oats.

What is the difference between apple crisp cobbler and crumble? ›

Whereas crisps and crumbles are topped with a streusel-like mixture, cobblers are topped with a cake-like batter or a biscuit-like dough.

Why is my apple crumble not crispy? ›

Butter, which encourages both browning and crispness, is the magic ingredient in getting your topping just right, so follow the recipe instructions. But if you feel your topping is still too dry and crumbly, (even for a crumble) add a bit more melted butter, a tablespoon at a time.
